Guide

Visitors, but no enquiries? Here's how to turn them into customers.

When people look at your website and leave without getting in touch, it's rarely about your service. Usually one of five things isn't clear enough yet. Here's how to check each one.

The five questions

What every visitor decides in seconds.

  1. 1

    What do you do?

A stranger should know within five seconds. Look at the top of your homepage: does the first headline say what you do and who it's for?

How to check: show your homepage to someone for five seconds, then ask what you do.

What good looks like: a plain headline that names the service and the customer.

  2. 2

Is this for someone like me?

People look for signs that you work with people in their situation: the same kind of business, the same problem, the same area.

How to check: does your site describe your customers in their own words?

What good looks like: a short line that says who you help, and examples that match.

  3. 3

    Can I trust you?

Reviews, real names, real photos, clear business details and past results all help a stranger feel safe getting in touch.

How to check: is there something a stranger can see that shows real people were happy?

What good looks like: a few honest reviews or stories, near the place where people decide.

  4. 4

    What happens next?

People hesitate when the next step feels like a big commitment. Knowing what comes after they get in touch makes it easy to say yes.

How to check: does your site say how fast you reply, what the first conversation is like, and whether it's free?

What good looks like: two or three short steps that show what happens after they contact you.

  5. 5

    How do I reach you?

The next step should be easy to find on every page, and easy to do on a phone.

How to check: on your phone, can you find a button or number without scrolling or searching?

What good looks like: one clear main button, repeated, and a short form.

Before you look for more traffic

More visitors won't fix an unclear page.

It's tempting to look for more visitors first. But if the page doesn't explain what you do and what happens next, more visitors just means more people leaving quietly.

Fix what people see first. Then bring more people to it, and every visitor is worth more.

Questions

Straight answers.

How do I know if my website is the problem?
If people visit but few get in touch, the page is the first place to look. Check how many visitors you get in Google Analytics or Search Console, then compare that with how many enquiries arrive. If visitors are steady and enquiries are rare, your website isn't yet doing enough of its job.
How long until I see more enquiries after making changes?
Small, clear changes can show a difference within a few weeks. It depends on how many people visit. A site with very few visitors takes longer to show a pattern.
Do I need a whole new website?
Not always. Often a clearer homepage, a visible next step and a few signs of trust are enough. If the site is hard to change or very out of date, a rebuild may be better. Our free Experience Check helps you tell the difference, and our refresh or rebuild guide walks through it.
Is the Experience Check really free?
Yes. Enter your website address and it shows you what a visitor sees: what already works and what to improve first.
